How long has your husband been a firefighter?
6 years officially, but he has been volunteering for 9 years, ever since he was in high school.
What is their ranking within the department?
Firefighter/EMT
So far, what has been your proudest moment in their career?
So far, what has been your proudest moment in their career?
This past year, my husband and a few other guys from his station were
given an award for their service and dedication to several mentally
handicapped adults that lived by their fire station. They were
recognized for inviting these adults into their station and making them
feel like they were "a part of the fireman family." It was truly
heartwarming to see the friendship between my husband and these adults.
My husband also is on the K9 Search and Rescue team and he volunteered
to go to Alabama after the tornadoes hit. He spent a week combing
through debris with his dog to make sure that no one was left behind.
In your opinion, what is the best part about being a part of the firefighter lifestyle?
In your opinion, what is the best part about being a part of the firefighter lifestyle?
I love my husband's schedule (for the most part) and the fact that he
gets several days off in a row at times. I also love the friendship that
my husband has with his fellow fireman and how the community is like
one big family. I know that we can count on these people if we ever need
anything.
In your opinion, what is the most difficult about being a part of the firefighter lifestyle?
Definitely the worrying - it is scary knowing that your husband goes
racing into burning buildings. They also respond to medical calls that
can include gunshots and violence and are at risk during those as well.
It's all about putting your trust in the Lord because you can't spend
each second worrying.
What has been the scariest moment in their career?
My husband and his crew were fighting a house fire and the captain told
them to pull back out of the house. Not less than two minutes later, the
roof collapsed. They could have been badly injured. It takes a lot of
training and skill to fight a fire as safely as possible.
What do you think is the most misunderstood part of firefighting?
That they are overpaid! The firemen here make a very "normal" salary,
comparable to a teacher. I also think that people don't understand how
much knowledge it takes to fight fire. Everything is very specific and
detailed and they have to spend a ton of time training.

I've been dating my sweet fireman for a little over 2 years now and I completely agree with all of your answers. I always worry when he's on shift, knowing he's risking his life. I also hate that people assume they make a HUGE salary... That is just not true, although I do feel they should be paid more because their job is absolutely not easy and takes such a smart and special person to be a firefighter/medic. Thanks for sharing :)
