So far, what has been your proudest moment in their career?

My proudest moment would probably be when I got to pin my husband when he completed orientation at the newest fire department he has worked for. He worked extremely hard throughout the whole process, and when it came time to have the ceremony, he asked me if I would be the person that pinned his badge onto his uniform in front of everyone. It's always a proud moment when you get to stand by a firefighter and say he's yours!

In your opinion, what is the best part about being a part of the firefighter lifestyle?

The firefighting community is very much a "brotherhood". If you need anything, even if it has nothing to do with firefighting, they are there for you. These guys would risk their lives for one another and not many people can say that. The wives know how difficult it can be at times, so it's nice having them around to talk to because they know exactly how you are feeling.
 

In your opinion, what is the most difficult part about being a part of the firefighter lifestyle?

The most difficult part of the firefighting lifestyle would be the hours. They do shift work (24 hours on, 48 hours off). So, there's always the one night out of three where you have to sleep alone. They also work holidays (what?! people get sick or have fires on holidays?!?) and while you can still go up to the station and visit them, it's definitely not the same as having them home with you enjoying the day.

What has been the scariest moment in their career?

The scariest moment would probably be when he was working at a smaller department and I hadn't heard from him since 10AM (it was now 8PM) and no one was picking up at the station, his cell or his partner's cell. Every "worst case scenario" pops into your head and the panic starts setting in. I finally got a call from him around 10PM and they had been working a brush fire the whole time and had just gotten it under control. 

 

What do you think is the most misunderstood part of firefighting?

That all firefighters do is put out fires. Now that they have combined EMT/Medics/Firefighters, they do a lot of medical calls. My husband says about 75% or more of the calls they get is strictly medical -- heart attacks, strokes, breathing problems, etc. Whenever the ambulance pulls up to a house, you can bet that at least one of the guys is not only a Medic or EMT but also a firefighter.
