Irving Fire Department
How long has your husband been a firefighter?
7 months
What is their ranking within the department?
What is their ranking within the department?
Firefighter/EMT
So far, what has been your proudest moment in their career?
Can I have two? #1 was just getting hired in the first place. I don't
think most people realize how difficult the tests are to get hired on!
Not only are there a lot of reading comprehension and math questions,
but HUNDREDS of people come to take the tests. I never knew how
"difficult" it was to get hired -- all the testing, background checks,
polygraphs, etc. #2 was being awarded the Brandon Phillips Award in the
Fire Academy. This award is peer voted and basically awarded to the
person you would want going into a fire with you. Very proud of him for
both of these accomplishments!
In your opinion, what is the best part about being a part of the firefighter lifestyle?
The schedule. We are having a baby in September, so the 24 on, 48 off
will give him a lot of time with the baby. (I'm a little jealous!) I
also love the sense of family and camaraderie. I honestly feel like
even though I haven't met many of the other firefighters yet, that I
could still call on any of them to help me if I needed to. I drive from
Fort Worth to Dallas every day for work and it's weird but I do feel a
little bit safer when I drive through Irving now haha!
In your opinion, what is the most difficult part about being a part of the firefighter lifestyle?
The schedule. This year it just so happens that the way his schedule
falls he will be working for our daughter's first day of school, my due
date, Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, and New Years Eve. It makes me sad
that he will miss out on those days with the family, but even more than
that it makes me nervous! Think of all the crazies out driving during
holidays, and the drunk drivers on NYE, etc. We can reschedule our
celebrations, but I hate to think about the things he will see during
those "peak" times. Also, I just really HATE sleeping alone!
What has been the scariest moment in their career?
We are pretty early in his career and thankfully he hasn't witnessed too
much yet. I would say the first fatality is always hard, and his just
happened to be a 4 month old baby girl. He was the one performing CPR
when they called time of death, with the parents standing by his side.
It's weird that when you think about the "scary stuff" it is usually the
image of them running into a burning building, but really there are so
many medical calls and just unknown situations that they go into.
What do you think is the most misunderstood part of firefighting?
What do you think is the most misunderstood part of firefighting?
I have to agree with Carly, I think it's that people assume if they
aren't out on a call then they are just sitting around the station
watching TV. They are busy! Studying maps/upcoming promotion tests,
cleaning the trucks/station, inspecting equipment, all kinds of things.

I also wanted to make sure that you guys knew about the great Christmas in July sale that Danielle from Framed Frosting will be hosting on the Framed Frosting Facebook page for the next two nights. The sale will begin at 8 pm EST Thursday and Friday night, and will feature multiple shops each night. Danielle will post a picture of the item with pricing details, and you will be able to purchase items by leaving your Paypal email address in the comments section. You will then be invoiced the next day.
There will be lots of amazing shops selling items at discounted prices with FREE shipping too! One of my friends, Brittany, from Naturally Estes (her shop name is Peas and Carrots) will be running some great deals on headbands and a necklace of hers on Thursday, and I plan to snatch up a few of those! And I'll be selling a few of my blog planners on Friday night too!
I hope you'll come out and support fellow women from the blogging community. I'm planning on getting some early Christmas shopping done (yes, I really think about Christmas and shop this early)!
Make sure you "like" Framed Frosting on Facebook so you can be a part of the sale.
